Our NYC Apartment: The Details That Make It Feel Like Home

I realized recently that I completely left you hanging on our apartment updates. Pregnancy, postpartum, two kids, and life in general completely derailed me, but now that we’ve had time to actually live in the space, I wanted to finally share some of my favorite corners of our home.

When we designed the apartment, I never wanted it to feel overly perfect or like a showroom. I wanted it to feel collected, warm, a little unexpected, and most importantly, like us. We mixed custom pieces with vintage finds, played with color and texture, and tried to create a home that could be beautiful while still surviving actual family life.

Here are a few of my favorite spaces and details.

The Mudroom

Our mudroom deserved a green moment.

This is one of the first spaces you see, so we wanted to do something playful rather than treat it like a purely functional pass-through. The inspiration was very Matilda Goad: a little whimsical, a little unexpected, and not afraid of color.

We paired green limewash walls with checkered green-and-white limestone floors and a custom curved bench. The velvet cushion softens all of the stone and wood and makes what could have been a forgotten corner feel like its own little room.

It’s proof that even the most practical spaces can have personality.

The Wood Bar

For the bar, we went in almost the opposite direction and kept everything really warm and organic.

We wanted it to have a Scandinavian simplicity, so we used light wood, clean lines, and fluted detailing to add texture without making the space feel busy. I love styling the open shelves with pieces we’ve collected over time rather than having everything perfectly matched.

It feels earthy and inviting and adds so much warmth to the apartment.

The Kids’ Corner

One of my favorite lessons since becoming a mom is that a kid-friendly home does not have to mean surrendering your entire apartment to primary-colored plastic.

We carved out this tiny nook for the kids with a little table and chairs where they can eat, color, and play. It blends into the rest of the apartment enough that it doesn’t feel like a separate playroom landed in the middle of our home.

The vintage mirrors next to it are one of my favorite details. They reflect the light from the windows and make the entire corner feel brighter and bigger.

Cute for them, still cute for me. A win.

The (Short-Lived) Pink Office

RIP to my pink office.

I loved this room so much and apparently enjoyed it for approximately three months before finding out Nina was coming and realizing it was destined to become her nursery.

The soft pink walls, oversized artwork, and tonal sofa made it such a cozy little jewel box. Did I want to give it up? No. Was Nina worth the sacrifice? Fine, yes.

At least I have photographic evidence that my office era existed.

The Living Room

The living room is probably the best representation of how I wanted our entire home to feel: elevated but still lived-in.

We kept the larger pieces relatively neutral and layered in warmth through velvet pillows, artwork, books, vintage pieces, and different textures. I never wanted everything to look like it came from the same showroom or was purchased at the same time.

Especially with two little kids, our living room has to actually be a living room. People sit here. Toys appear here. Bottles inevitably end up here. And somehow, the mix of warmer, collected pieces makes all of that feel like part of the space rather than something we have to hide.

The Little Foyer Finds

A home starts to feel like yours when it stops looking perfectly styled and starts telling your story.

And after living here through pregnancy, bringing Nina home, raising Benny, and watching our family change so much, I think that’s what I love most about this apartment now.

It isn’t exactly the same home we designed on paper — and that’s the best part. It has evolved with us, gotten messier, more layered, more kid-filled, and much more personal.

There are still plenty more apartment updates I owe you, so consider this my official return to sharing them.
